OUR GOAL

At Amherst Dance Academy, our goal is to provide dance education, miscellaneous dancewear, and personal growth opportunities at a competitive and affordable price.  We take pride in being able to offer our dancers more than what they would find at other studios.  We also take very seriously the environment and education your dancer receives.  Our goal is to provide a challenging, positive, and fun environment that is influential in the lives of our dancers as we teach and build in your dancer proper dance technique, respect, discipline, and self-esteem.  We believe even difficult things can be achieved when the bar is set high and and the door of opportunity is left wide open for the dancer to walk through it.

OUR MISSION

Founded upon the premise of making dance fun for all ages, our studio doors opened seventeen years ago, under the name of Terrific Time Dance Studio.  Now, we are excited to serve you as Amherst Dance Academy!  A new name, but our foundation is the same.  We believe that dance is not just about competition, stage performance, and technique.  Dance is more powerful than that.  Don't get us wrong, though, we support and participate in competitions, performances, and dance recitals; and much of our class time is spent learning correct technique.  However, our main focus is making sure that the dancers learn to love dancing!  That means creating an environment that is positive and energetic.  We believe that each dancer should be given the opportunity to achieve something incredible, and this becomes possible when the environment reflects that the sky is the limit!

Our Instructors:

Miss Joy

The owner of Amherst Dance Academy, Miss Joy has been dancing since she was three years old.  With a love of dance that drives her each and every day, Miss Joy shares her passion to her students in types of genres.  She teaches tap, ballet, jazz, pointe, tumbling, and mommy and me tumbling.  Miss Joy has a passion to see students love dance as much as she does, so she enjoys working with all age groups.

Some of her background includes, but is not limited to:

  • Joy began her dance instruction under Ann Gustafson at the age of 3.
  • Joy earned a place in the High Stepz Danze Company competition line where she spent many years competing both regionally and nationally. As a member of High Stepz Danze Company, she also performed in many community events including county fairs, parades, talent shows and various functions at schools, senior centers, and business parties. After teaching as an assistant throughout high school, Joy taught tap, ballet, jazz and tumbling/acrobatics at Jefferson College where she enjoyed helping others develop a love of dance.
  • Joy is currently a full time teacher/owner of Amherst Dance Academy and a full time mother of two boys and a little girl.

Miss Alison

Miss Alison will be working with the pre-school dancers and beginning elementary dancers (red, pink, Pre-Primary/Primary classes).  She loves the little ones and enjoys teaching ballet and tap in a combination class or in full genre class.  Miss Alison also helps in the office with administrative work and working with customers when she is not teaching.

After graduating high school in 2003, I went on to Elon University in North Carolina to pursue a degree in Psychology.  I also studied abroad in London twice and Ghana once. During one of my stays in London, I had the opportunity to work as an intern at the internationally known Anna Freud Centre. I received a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Elon University in 2007. I then moved back home to Amherst and took a position at Little Learners Preschool, where I was the lead teacher of a 2 1/2 year old class for a year. I am currently working at Monelison Middle School as a Day Treatment Clinician.

Miss Rebecca

A teacher with us for two years, Rebecca brings her expertise with toddlers and elementary age children.  She specializes in tumbling for younger age groups as they learn how to balance and control different muscles.  Miss Rebecca also serves as an assistant in ballet classes as well.  She is one instructor that has come from a studio where the instructors were not friendly.  You will soon find with Miss Rebecca that she makes class fun and loves her students.

  • Miss Rebecca comes to us with 4 years of experience in tap, jazz, and ballet.
  • Instructor for gymnastics in Connecticut for 2 years.
  • Instructor with Terrific Time for 2 years specializing in Cheernastics and tumbling.

  • Current dancer with "In His Steps Ministries" through Cornerstone Community Church.
  • Instructor for children in multiple programs (youth - life skills, middle school - relationships)
  • Miss Rebecca creates an environment in her class where the students ask for "homework".  They want to work on more when while they are at home.
  • Married and enjoys her 3 year old little girl (also taking classes) and her husband.
  • Enjoys taking photos!

This year, Miss Rebecca will continue with tumbling.  We are very excited to have Miss Rebecca on board with us this year again, and look forward to many more years to come.  Miss Rebecca and Miss Joy have known each other for years and love working together.  Miss Rebecca also enjoys her family and taking photographs.

Our Customer Service/Office Staff:

Mr. Jason

The husband of Miss Joy and business manager of Amherst Dance Academy.  Mr. Jason handles about 90% of the customer service related questions, tuition, scheduling, advertising, teachers, finances, and many other miscellaneous tasks.  He is very happy to not have to teach dance as he is sure that is would not be in the best interest of the studio.  Mr. Jason also manages the website, registrations, and inventory at the studio.
